History of Hikkaduwa Divisional Secretariat

Hikkaduwa divisional secretariat office was established in 1970. The staff was included eight clerks and an assistant government agent.

Location

Galle District of Southern Province is made up of 19 Divisional Secretariat Divisions and it is the largest Divisional Secretariat area in 97 Grama Niladhari Divisions. When traveling from Galle to Colombo, about 12 kilometers Hikkaduwa Divisional Secretariat Division covers an area of about 65 square kilometers inland, which is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the west.

The coastal zone extends over a distance of 24 km, while the interior of the country extends 4 km from the northern part. In the southern part, it covers about 4.8 km geographical area. Our Hikkaduwa Divisional Secretariat is located in the Eastern longitudes 80 - 3 and 80 - 10 and the northern latitudes are between 6 - 3 and 6 - 14.

The main boundaries of the Hikkaduwa Divisional Secretariat are the Ambalangoda Divisional Secretariat in the North and the East. South-east of Baddegama and Gonapinuwala Divisional Secretariats Four Gravets Divisional Secretariat is also in the West and Indian Ocean. The area from Gintota Bridge to Orawatta Bridge can be further defined as the boundaries of Hikkaduwa Divisional Secretariat.

The land area of Hikkaduwa is 6511 hectares and it is 65 square kilometers. This is 4% of the total land area of the Galle District. It is the 12th largest of the 19 Divisional Secretariats in the Galle District.
